[23:36] I've been an Ubuntu user for quite a while.. and I'm looking to switch from that to Slackware. I've heard some good and bad things about both (Ubuntu and Slackware). I know its a bit more hands on with Slackware, which I'm not afraid of. Just more curious what type of pitfalls I might run into.. with Ubuntu everything worked and I Didnt have to do jack.. which is bothersome since I'm looking to do this for a living... [23:36] thrice, stupid me again, robby's and erick's rss feeds work, all I get is "no entry for selected time stamp" on the http://dev.slackware.it/rss/ link. [23:37] one of the biggest complaints from outsiders is that slackware doesn't have a package manager that manages dependences [23:37] hrm.. I've done some research and I see slackpkg [23:38] Which from what I gather is just some sort of wrapper script around.. uhh pkgtools or something? [23:38] that is a good interface to pkgtool [23:38] yeah [23:38] it adds yum like features to it [23:38] but it still doesn't do dependency resolution [23:38] and from what I've read that interfaces only with official repositories? [23:38] slackware packages traditionally don't have such information [23:38] yes [23:38] hold your hand,= Ubuntu [23:38] ChrisPontius: you can modify the mirror file and make it point to any mirror you want [23:38] Dependencies aren't a problem.. need to learn how to track them down eventually anyway :) [23:39] hehe yeah [23:39] sink or swim = Slackware [23:39] to me, being able to break dependencies when i want, is a god send [23:39] Well, I guess my next question... why would you break dependencies? [23:39] i think i got sick of Ubuntu after about a month of use over 3 years ago [23:40] there are times, i just really want this program to install, without cyclic dependencies [23:40] I see [23:40] example, a program CAN interface with postgresql, and i may not want to use it [23:40] knnk (~ngworekar@cpe-66-68-104-116.austin.res.rr.com) joined ##slackware. [23:40] but because it still depends on it, yum would install it [23:40] slackware lets you break that [23:40] easily [23:41] I see.. but that just means you're missing a feature? [23:41] of the software that is.. [23:41] yeah [23:41] ? [23:41] right [23:41] right [23:41] i mean, some software, require things to run at all [23:41] but thats where tracking down the dependency gets fun [23:41] Well, MOST Of what I've seen lists what they need on their sites [23:41] what is the best way to set your own CFLAGS in slackware? Gentoo has /etc/make.conf but which is the easiest way in slack ? [23:42] or at least in some source file somewhere... I've dealt with source before, just not at the level Slackware is [23:42] make CFLAGS= [23:42] depends.. are you using a slackbuild script? [23:42] yeah, mostly [23:43] not always tho. [23:43] wait.. aarchvile ? [23:43] I know that nick... [23:43] do you play doom ? [23:43] ET [23:43] dunno [23:43] i am a doom player : P [23:43] not the same guy then [23:43] hehe [23:43] yeah [23:43] ChrisPontius: read the slackbook and the support documentation on the DVD and you will be prepared for the install [23:44] I've been reading the slackbook actually.. [23:44] one reason I ended up here I guess [23:44] i also saw a guy once who had the same nick as mine but he played dota [23:44] i don't think installing it is his problem :p [23:44] is there a way to automate a lot of the slackbuilds.org packages? I have a ton to build and don't fancy sitting around all night using the same commends [23:44] sbopkg ? [23:44] sbopkg streamlines things [23:44] sbopkg might be of use in that situation [23:44] sbopkg? [23:45] ChrisPontius: its a third party unsupported interface into slackbuilds.org [23:45] http://www.google.fi/search?hl=fi&client=firefox-a&hs=J3W&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&&sa=X&ei=oeA7TJXyIc6fOOqwxYoK&ved=0CCIQBSgA&q=sbopkg&spell=1 [23:45] sbopkg.org is the website for the project [23:45] er.... slackbuilds.org...?
